Awards
Davis Award
Presented each year to the students who are their chapter's
outstanding member(s), the Davis Award is named for Dr.
Edward Davis of American International College. Dr. Davis
is regarded as the father of Region VI. He was the region's
first secretary-treasurer. He passed away before the end of
his four-year term.
Regional
Scholarships
In
addition to the national awards that are given out at each
convention, Region VI members will have the option of
submitting their presented works for consideration of one
of several small awards handed out by the regional council
members.

Scholarship Recipients and Alternates for
2009-2010
Gaston
and Nolle Scholarships
The Edwin W. Gaston, Jr.
and Alfred H. Nolle scholarships are for members in their
senior year of undergraduate study. For eligibility, a
nominee must be a full-time undergraduate student in the
fall of the academic year following his or her nomination
in the spring. Two Gaston Scholarships worth $2,500 and ten
Nolle Scholarships worth $1,500 each are awarded each year.
All nominees automatically compete for both awards.
The Gaston Scholarship is named for Dr. Edwin Gaston, who
served as national president from 1967 to 1979, during a
period of great growth for Alpha Chi. The Nolle Scholarship
is named for one of the society’s pioneers, Dr. Alfred
Nolle, who served as secretary-treasurer for 41
years.
Sledge and Benedict Fellowships
The Robert W. Sledge and
H. Y. Benedict fellowships are for the first year of
graduate study toward the master’s, doctor’s, or
professional degree at any recognized institution. For
eligibility, a nominee must plan to complete his or her
undergraduate degree in the academic year in which
application is made and must enroll full-time in a graduate
or professional program in the fall semester of the award
year. Two Sledge Fellowships worth $3,500 and ten Benedict
Fellowships worth $2,500 each are awarded each year. All
nominees automatically compete for both awards.
The Sledge Fellowship is named for Dr. Robert Sledge, who
served on the National Council twenty-four years, 1973-87
and 1989-99, twelve of those as president. He also is
author of the history of Alpha Chi’s first 75 years. The
Benedict Fellowship honors the society’s first president,
Dr. Harry Benedict.
Pryor Fellowships
The Joseph E. Pryor
Graduate Fellowship competition is open to (1) active
alumni members (i.e., alumni whose annual dues are paid by
the time of the application) and (2) graduate student
members at Alpha Chi institutions at the time of
application.
In 2008-09, one fellowship of $5,000 will be awarded to an
applicant in a doctoral program, and one fellowship of
$3,000 will be awarded to an applicant in terminal master's
degree or a first professional degree program.
The Pryor Fellowship is to be used for full-time graduate
or professional study (beyond the baccalaureate level) for
the academic year following the application deadline of
February 1. The stipend will be paid to the recipient upon
official notification of the student's enrollment in such a
program for the fall semester. This fellowship may only be
received one time per person.
This fellowship is named for Dr. Joseph E. Pryor
(1918-2006), who served as Alpha Chi's secretary-treasurer
and its first executive director.
